My Sewing Mat with Pockets

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hi my friends! I hope your new year has gotten off to a great start! Today, I’m sharing my first finished make of the year…my sewing mat. This project started as just a mat to sit underneath my sewing machine but I always wanted a mat that had pockets for my tools I reach for while I’m sewing. Read the original post here.

I found a really easy YT video from Chelsea of “She Sews Seams” where she turned two dish drying mats from Dollar Tree into a sewing mat with pockets. You can watch the video reel here or below (it’s about 4 mins. long). This is a such an easy pattern!

At the time though, I didn’t have any dish drying mats but I had a mat that I sewed last year and tried to do a little quilting stitching on top.

I thought I could add pockets to my mat and when I have dish drying mats in future, I can make another one (which I ended up doing, but that’s for another post!) So, after watching this video, I took my mat and folded it from the bottom up about a third of the way so I could make three pockets. I sewed the ends using my walking foot which I’m glad I did.

Then, I decided to make my left and right pockets smaller and the same size so that my middle pocket would be wider to fit my snips, seam ripper and guides into and I just did top stitches to make the pockets ensuring I did backstitching on all ends. Once done I had a beautiful sewing mat that drapes over my table right under my sewing machine!

Please forgive the pictures, I didn’t stage these, I just took snapshots! But you can see how I keep my larger and small wonder clips nearby with this mat. I love it soooo much!

The fabric came from Dollar Tree and the mat measures approximately 17″ x 15″. And, please don’t mind the stitches…I’m still new at this so I am continuously practicing straight stitching and one day I’ll get it right! For now, I’m so happy with my mat and I love her in all her pink!
