Creating Heals and Gives Me Purpose ~ BellaArt Creatives

Creating Heals and Gives Me Purpose

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There’s something deeply powerful about making things with our hands. For me, crafting isn’t just a hobby—it’s a lifeline, a way to connect with God’s peace and joy.

What’s on my Craft Table?

Over the past couple of months, I’ve been sewing, crocheting and preparing for holiday projects. I found a quicker method to making sock snowmen (made hundreds years ago) to trying my hand at making sock monkeys, to restarting my felt stitching projects this fall—each creation feels like a little step forward on my journey of healing. This year, I want a “candy cane/peppermint” theme for Christmas so I want to stitch items for the tree in reds and pinks!

Sewing is my new Jam!

My craft space has also been evolving. What started with cardmaking has now become more of a sewing sanctuary. This week, my dear friend, Kimberly, gifted me beautiful fabrics for my birthday and I’ve been organizing them with fresh inspiration. Each fabric feels like an invitation to dream, design and create something meaningful. I’ve got so many ideas in my head right now!

I have also changed the space a bit. My craft table is now my sewing table with my Brother XR3774 sitting on it along with some threads, pin cushions and other notions. Earlier this week, I covered the table and my office desk with this pretty “peel and stick” paper with a white wood design and I love it! There’s a link to it below.

Healing Continues

Crafting is one of the most unexpected tools in my healing from PTSD. When I sit down to stitch, crochet, or sew, the noise of my past trauma fades and I find focus, peace and joy. In those moments, I’m reminded that God designed me to create and that creativity can be a channel of His healing.

Creating provides purpose.

I’ve struggled with my purpose for most of my life but I’m also reminded that even in brokenness, beauty can be made. All my projects, every handmade treasure is more than just an object—it’s a symbol of resilience, faith and hope. And, even when I want things to be perfect and they don’t turn out that way…it’s still a treasure-I made something that didn’t exist. And handmade is special and cherished because of its imperfectness.

Crafting turns my attention away from the noise of the world and all that’s going on around me. I can lose myself in creating while drowning out all the negative.

Whether you craft with yarn, fabric, paper or even in the kitchen, I hope you also find the healing joy that comes from creating. Because every stitch, every brushstroke, every handmade detail is a reminder: we are made in the image of the Creator Himself.

If you’re a crafter, I’d love to know how crafting heals you and makes you happy by leaving a comment!
